Prepress

After you upload files, we review them page-by-page to make sure they will print correctly. We will correct obvious errors for you and notify you about others that might need your attention.

For exact reprints where you are not re-submitting new files, then we do not need to perform this service and no fee is required.

Text Paper (interior pages)

Please select the preferred paper for the body (interior pages) of your book. Use matt or gloss coated paper for books with lots of images; uncoated paper is best for books that are mostly just text (words).

Endsheets

Endsheets, sometimes known as "fly leaves", cover the greyboard and attach the book to the case.

Cover Printing

Full color printed laminated cases (PLC) are standard, but we also offer options for Rainbow textured binding paper, genuine cloth, imitation leather, and real bonded leather. NOTE: Maximum height for PLC hardcovers is 11.75".

Our luxurious white printable woven cloth can be printed any solid color, including the line art to save from having to pay for foil stamping. Or print 4/c process images / backgrounds beautifully for special effect. Printed cloth cases can be 12" tall.

We use PrimeOne 100% recycled solid greyboard to make our cases. Interlocking cross-grain fiber construction prevents warped books. To learn more, click here.

Gloss lamination is very smooth and shiny.  Dull lamination is smooth, not shiny.. Soft touch matt lamination is dull with a velvet finish. UV varnish is slightly more economical and when used with uncoated paper on the case gives a more natural, artistic feel.

Head & Tail bands

Head & Tail bands (sometime referred to as headbands and footbands) are purely decorative items glued to the top and bottom of the book block. While not adding any strength to the binding, they give hardbound books a finished appearance.

Dust Jacket

Dustjackets add value to your hardcover books in the eyes of consumers. Plus they protect the case underneath and can easily be replaced if damaged during shipping. We print our dustjackets on 100# glossy stock and add film lamination to keep them from tearing.

Binding

FCI Digital uses PUR adhesive in our case binding process to insure pages printed on coated stock will not fall out of the book, even with the passage of time or under cold conditions. Many digital book printers bind books with regular hot melt glue, which can harden over time, leading to binding failure.

For books that will receive particularly rough use - meaning bending back the covers 180 degrees - as might occur in the hands of children books, we recommend choosing "side stitching". This drives a staple (invisible after binding) into the spine of the book block for extra security.  Downside is that book will not open and lie as flat as PUR adhesive bound.

We use PrimeOne 100% recycled solid greyboard to make our cases; which are carefully made to avoid warping. To learn more, click: https://www.lbsbind.com/products/cover-board/primeone-board/

Proofing

Your cover is the most important aspect of your book and we recommend getting a cover proof. Applying a film lamination to the cover slightly alters the color; if your publication is color critical you should consider ordering a film laminated cover proof.

Hardcopy color proofs of your interior pages show trim marks and bleed. You should consider ordering a full set of color proofs if your publication is color critical. Otherwise, you will receive an online softproof to view and approve.

Additional Options

Retailer stores require a barcode to scan the ISBN and price at checkout. The barcode is normally placed on the back cover. Our barcodes are output at high resolution and guaranteed to scan. Our price includes stripping the barcode into your supplied cover file.

ISBN numbers uniquely identify your book, allowing bookstores to reach the publisher to order books. RR Bowker issues ISBNs - current prices are $195 for one, or $295 for ten. If you plan to publish multiple books, you should purchase from them directly. Purchasing an ISBN from us will show us as the publisher, and if we are contacted, we will forward the contact information to you.

Shrinkwrap

Shrinkwrapping protects your books against dust, dirt, and moisture.

Ebook Conversion

Price shown is for standard reflowable .ePub. $150  minimum charge. Additional cost may apply depending on complexity level and number of pages.

Schedule

Please select expedited delivery if your project is under a tight deadline. Schedules vary depending on plant conditions, time of year, etc. We will be in touch to better understand your requirements. Estimated schedules are WORKING days.
